There is nothing better than watching an antique piece of machinery starting up without a problem, and that’s exactly what we get here. This giant Sulzer engine is an antique diesel engine that is the definition of huge.
Built in the early 1900s, this engine is capable of putting out a dainty 100 horsepower yet weighs almost 200 tons. The guys in the video have to baby it a little and use some finesse to get her ticking over, but once they get her going, the old diesel engine chugs away as if she has never missed a beat.

Sulzer has been building engines ever since engines have been built. Now part of the larger Wärtsilä Company, Sulzer’s engines are still the biggest and best in the sea-faring shipping world. The antique engine featured in the video was originally built to power a ship and in its day was one of the monsters of the engine world.
There was no starting this old diesel with a key, though. It took tons of experience and just the right touch to get these old beasts to turn over and start firing - and this Sulzer is no exception. The fact that it still starts up today is a testament to the durability and reliability of the Sulzer diesel engine.
